Entertainment in rural El Paso, Texas was relatively sparse back in the 1950s, so imagination and wonder were necessities for any youngster. But baseball was ubiquitous. Radio still dominated the media and boys would gather around the console to hear from afar. Games were a daily event and from time to time, major leaguers passed through town and caught a Little League game. At least this was the case for our consignor in his letter about this amazing signed baseball.

Ty Cobb threw out the first pitch of the 1956 season for El Paso’s Little League team, the “Y’s Men” and graciously autographed this sphere in blue ballpoint. So impressed with his autograph, Little League player and ball owner, David Olsen, had his team sign the ball next to Cobb, much to the chagrin of his father. This evenly toned “Official Little League” Spalding baseball presents nine other signatures with Ty Cobb and a West panel with possibly signature removal. However, nothing can take away the allure of this heartwarming baseball signed by a Texas Little League team and their adopted centerfielder, Ty Cobb. Our consignor has included a typewritten account of the event attesting to the legitimacy of the signatures of Dave Olsen, Bill Long, Mike Oyster, Bobby Martin and Ty Cobb among others.
